Some of the rare plant species that can be found here are Moehringia papulosa, Potentilla caulescens , Rhamnus saxatilis , Saxifraga australis and Ephedra major. Among the park’s fauna are 29 species of amphibians and reptiles, like the Italian cave salamander (Speleomantes italicus), the four-lined snake (Elaphe quatuorlineata). Some 105 species of nesting birds inhabit the area, including the golden eagle, the goshawk , the short-toed snake eagle , the red kite, the lanner falcon, the peregrine, the kestrel, the little owl, the barn owl, the tawny owl, the eagle owl (Bubo bubo). The 40 mammal species that roam the park include the wild boar , the fallow deer and the roe deer, the red deer, the European wildcat, the European polecat, the fox, the wolf, the weasel, the beech marten, the badger, the hare, the squirrel, the crested porcupine, the garden dormouse, the hedgehog, the blind mole, and the shrew. Speleology

The Grotta Grande del Vento opened for tourists in 1974 and provides a chance for a close encounter with the karst environment of the Frasassi caves. Speleology is more than a sport. It is a method of exploration, documentation, and scientific research in very distinct, ecologically fragile natural environments. The region’s speleology groups regularly organise introductory courses that give people a safe, environmentally suitable approach to this discipline.
NB: in some cases, entry to the caves may be restricted.

Gommoning (river tubing), Kayaking and Canoeing

The Sentino and Esino rivers, which run through the Frasassi and Gola della Rossa gorges respectively, have long stretches suitable for these water sports. As with all activities in fast-flowing waters, when planning a descent, it is important to be aware of local water conditions. Difficulty and access to routes can vary significantly depending on local water conditions.
